ET Telecom reported that four years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his ambitious ‘Digital India’ mission, around 51 railway stations coming under the ambits of both South Central Railway and East Coast Railway have got free Wi-Fi connectivity.

The railways have installed free internet for commuters at more number of rural stations than the urban ones in the state. “This will help village youths who don’t have access to net connectivity to use the Wi-Fi facility at railway stations to get e-notes for studies or register with online portals of various government job services,” a railway official said. However, the railways will also, in turn, rake in revenues from platform tickets, which the youths are supposed to purchase for entering the station premises.

Till now, 400 railway stations across the country have got Wi-Fi facility, with 24 A and A1 category stations from the state including Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Tirupati, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Kakinada, Guntakal, Kadapa and Srikakulam featuring in the list. Among the 27 rural stations having internet coverage are Gunadala, Godavari, Gannavaram, Krishna Canal and Nuzvid, to name a few. As of now, total 300 stations in the rural parts of the country are allowing people to enjoy the free Wi-Fi.

Rail Tel Corporation of India has collaborated with Google to execute the Wi-Fi project across the state on the lines of the Centre’s ‘Digital India’ mission. A railway official said that “The internet speed is unrestricted for the first half hour in a day per user and then the speed drops off to 2 mbps so that other commuters on the platforms can browse the internet."
